Through Thinking

Imagine how much time we all spend (web opportunity types) looking at conversion tracking, traffic statistics, backlinks, looking for good links, actually exchanging links, reading / learning more, considering page rank, finding affiliates, you fill in your blank spaces...

Instead of working on our websites to make them the absolute best in their genre & successful monetarily, we are stand knee high in the small stuff. (the industry perpetuates "the easy way out" & the "black hat sportsters" due to the lack of their absolute control...ancient paradigm). At any rate, it's funny how people will expend twice as much effort getting out of work as necessary to complete the job twice. I'm often guilty of this attribute & discard it as "getting side tracked" or "doing more background research". I know what to do - quit procrastinating & just freakin do it already....just thinking out loud.

It's Not ALL Bad!

The usefulness of affiliate based websites that utilize search engine optimization techniques are not all bad! Granted there are so many websites that are seemingly useless for humans, and are obviously solely designed for the benefit of the designer, it is sometimes difficult to defend the affiliate marketer. I want to suggest that if done properly everyone wins. What is the harm in promoting niche based products that will be exchanged due to filling a need? For example when someone online searches for unique product X and finds junk, why not show them a page of unique product X's from multiple retailers? (example: Target, Walmart, Mom & Pop X, Local Retailer B) Not only does this improve lackluster serp's (search engine results pages), it gives the searcher a variety of options. Not to mention the opportunity for these widely varying sources the ability to compete for a sale (level playing field), also the chance for the hard working advertiser & retailers to make a small profit. Affiliate marketing can essentially be a huge positive for all involved. But it seems like everything else...a few bad apples spoil the whole barrel. I say forget that!

Value to Affiliate Marketing

Why does affiliate marketing get such a bad rap? If you frequent any good online forum for SEO & SEM you will undoubtedly notice that most sections dealing with affiliate marketing and working from home on the Internet, get a poor reception from more conciencious members. Why? Because the whole concept of earning a unconventional living has been slaughtered. Working at home sharletens, coupled with the apparent anarchy of the internet has yielded a generation that is more cuonsumer aware (& rightfully so) than ever. The dot bust that is fresh in the mouths of those toughting it's still unattained opportunity, continues to feed the lack of stability of any internet based aspiration. However, the Ineternet is a medium with the capacity to enable john doe in an arena equal to that of a huge corporation. Certainly not on a level playing field considering corp. resources and the like, yet still the opportunity to play. The Internet allows you a prize fight, on any given day, even if you are a virtually unknown in the marketing arena, if you can utilize unconventional tachtics, ethically. Scraper sites, websites intended only for robots, and get rich quick from home pushers have given SEM affiliate sites a bad name. My next post will desribe the value of a true affiliate marketing website.

Free Directories to Submit Links to

Below is an email I am sending to some people that are helping me acquire inbound links. They are pretty unfamiliar with website promotion or search engine marketing so the info is pretty basic but there might be some useful information in there for you too?....

Ok here is the way to submit a website to various web directories….
First of all let’s look at this list of directories containing 384 sites that accept non-reciprocal / free submissions. (a reciprocal link is one that is two way – we link to them and they link to us, although these are beneficial, they are not nearly as effective is one way, non-reciprocal links)
http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/free-web-directories.html
At this list of directories you will notice that they can be sorted according to several factors including Google Page Rank (PR), number of backlinks from major search engines (this number is how many websites link to them – i.e. link popularity), Alexa Traffic Ranking, etc. Don’t concern yourself with these specs since we intend to submit our websites to all of them. (Remember an inbound link can ONLY help a website, but outbound links CAN damage your site if not done properly)
Just about every directory that you submit a website to will be different as far as the method, and amount of information required to complete the link request. Likewise, having your link become active in a directory may be instantaneous or may take weeks, or even months. This usually depends on whether the directories approve listings automatically, or if they require a human editor to review websites that request to be listed. (The latter are usually higher quality and more beneficial however take longer to acquire.)
The whole idea is to visit each of the directories listed & submit information about our websites so they will be included on their sites. When you are going through the list you will find that some of the directories are no longer directories at all. Some of them are no longer free or might not be functional. This is very common since the directories are free and sometimes low quality to begin with. The process can be tedious but it is an absolutely necessary factor of search engine placement.
Let’s take a look at the first directory on the list…
http://www.01webdirectory.com/
This is an example of a nice, clean directory that is pretty easy to navigate.
At the bottom of the homepage there is a link that says “submit URL” (something similar like “add site”, “submit link”, “include resource”, etc. will be found at all the directories.)
As most of the sites will, the “submit link” button from the homepage will take you a page describing the method to request your sites included. The majority of the time you will need to drill down to the exact category that describes your site and click on the “submit URL” link from there. Finding the appropriate category to submit the links to is important. Try to make sure that you have found the category that best describes or relates to what each sites content is about. This is especially important to the better directories that are human reviewed. They usually are not inclined to move your listing to the appropriate category, rather deleting it.
So here are three websites we want to promote …
http://www.wrought-iron-curtain.com/
http://www.buy-unique.com/
http://www.notchickenfeed.com/

So the wrought iron site would fit into this path –
Home >> Online Shopping & Services >> Home & Garden
When you reach the “home & garden” subdirectory look for the submit URL text at the bottom of the page. When the text is clicked on from here it will take you to the submission of site information page. (Look it over as most directories require similar info about your site.) As you look a little closer, you will see that this directory doesn’t allow free listings in this particular category, stating - (Note: Please note that this category doesn't have a free submission option) You will find that this is also true concerning gifts and home business opportunities. So we skip this one and move on to the next directory listing. http://www.123kidzarea.com/
When we get down to the directory –
Index : Shopping : For the Home : Home Furnishings
All this site requires we do is enter the URL of our site (http://www.wrought-iron-curtain.com/) The website then will send out a spider to collect our sites info automatically and then may or may not be reviewed by an editor before inclusion. You will need to repeat the process with each of the other two websites by finding their correct category and typing the URL (or cutting and pasting).
Let’s look at the third directory on the list…
http://www.19230.com/
You will notice that when you click on this one, it is no longer a directory and resolves to some foreign junk, under a different website name. Skip along….
4th one….
http://www.2-surf.net/
With this directory they require you to also choose a username and password prior to submission. It doesn’t matter what you pick but I would keep it the same for all of the directories if you can.
You can use my name / address for them….

Gillette Cooperative, rllp
450 West Cook Street
Springfield, Illinois 62704
Business Phone – 217-525-xxxx (same for fax)
tyler@gillette-coop.com

Oh yeah, it is also important that you always use a valid email address when you submit to these places. Many will send you a confirmation email that you will need to click on in order to complete your request! Use my email address or yours, but if you use yours be sure to check your mail and click on the message link if required.

Ok so that is the process of adding websites to non-reciprocal directories.

You should vary what title and description you use for each site. It is best to have the linking text vary some, directory to directory. It looks unnatural or “robotic” to the search engines to see the same exact link text and description across hundreds of sites / directories, so I've included 3 for each site. I have looked up these keywords in the title in wordtracker & found them to be some good ones for low competition in the niche’s they are in. You will notice that some of them point to a sub-page of the site. ( http://www.wrought-iron-curtain.com/indoor/indoor-lighting.htm) rather than the homepage. Some directories will allow this and some wont, give them a try as a sub-page and if that doesn’t work, just reduce it to the base URL (http://www.wrought-iron-curtain.com/) The most important part is the Title & shouldn’t be changed from what I’ve listed above. (also know as link text or anchor text – i.e. Unique Gifts, Wine Gift Baskets, or Gifts for Her) The descriptions are not as important & can be changed to anything you want as long they are loosely related. (or copy and paste the descriptions as they are)
We are only interested in getting free listings at this point. We definitely want to spend our money on the ones that will give us the most bang for the buck. (I have a list of those & have submitted to a few)
At any rate that's about it, welcome to the easiest way of getting one way, inbound text links – free directories! :)

Also, if you could cut and paste the URL’s of the directories that you are able to successfully submit to, into notepad that would be great. This way we will avoid duplicate entries and have a better list of where to visit for the next set of websites we create and want to promote. Ok, my fingers hurt….let me know if you have any questions or problems.
THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!!

Home Business Website Completed, Finally!

Well after many late nights and much blurred vision, the website I have been working on is finally at a stopping point for a while. http://www.notchickenfeed.com I have spent a couple hundred dollars on pay per click advertising, submitted it to the basic search engines and 10 URL listings in the Microsoft Small Business directory. (also purchased a link from Best of the Web Directory - because it was on discount) I don't think I am going to have enough time to get a bunch of text links to it because I have several other work related topics that need attention. I think I will pay to get a few of the biggest directories to include me, and possibly buy some text links from a few high PR - authority sites, but other than that I am not going to do alot of promotion right away. I hope it naturally gets some traffic from keyword selection, but as all sites go, it's a long tedeous battle against wait & see.
